What Is Ube? The Purple Flavor on Our Menu

Our chalkboard calls it sweet purple potato, which is how many customers first hear about it. Botanically, ube is a purple yam (Dioscorea alata).

Filipino families cook ube with milk and sugar into ube halaya, a jam used in cakes, ice cream and halo-halo. In a latte it tastes sweet, nutty and a little like vanilla, and the color is natural. It is often confused with taro, which is a different plant with a milder, starchier taste.

For more on the flavors behind our menu, read the Filipino coffee guide, or learn why ube matters to founder Fidas Timbuleng in the Koffee Paradise story.

What to Order on Your First Visit

  • Never had ube? Get an iced ube latte and stir it halfway, so you taste the coffee and the ube separately. Free samples are available if you ask.
  • Want to try several? Order a coffee flight and share it.
  • Prefer less sweet? Ask for half the syrup or half the ube, or go with a cortado or americano.
  • Skipping caffeine? A steamer, hot chocolate or a mango Breeze.

The full menu is poured at Koffee Paradise on East Main Street and at Koffee Paradise Worthington. More answers are on the Koffee Paradise FAQ.

Prices are taken from the in-store menu board (October 2026) and can change. The board at the counter is always the final price.
